The History of Big Sandy, TX

Big Sandy is a small East Texas community in southwestern Upshur County, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 80 and State Highway 155. The town began developing in the early 1870s after the Texas and Pacific Railway reached the area. A second rail line, known as the Tyler Tap, later crossed the Texas and Pacific near Big Sandy Creek, creating a railroad junction that became known as “Big Sandy Switch.” A post office was established in 1875, and the community soon grew around the railroad with stores, churches, schools, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses. By the early 1900s, Big Sandy had become a local shipping and agricultural center for products including cotton, lumber, potatoes, and livestock. The community officially incorporated in 1926 and has retained much of its small-town East Texas character ever since.
