The History of Longview, TX

Longview is a historic East Texas city located primarily in Gregg County, with a portion extending into Harrison County. The community was founded in 1870 when the Southern Pacific Railroad expanded through the area. The city's name is traditionally attributed to railroad surveyor Ossamus Hitch Methvin, who reportedly remarked about the impressive "long view" from the area.
